The new method, called MitoCatch, can deliver healthy mitochondria (the tiny energy centers of cells) with pinpoint accuracy into diseased, dying cells. This targeted solution could bring an immediate breakthrough, first in treating a rare eye disease that causes blindness in young boys. Moreover, the technology is not limited to the eye. In the next 5–10 years, it could play a key role in cancer immunotherapy, preventing cell damage after heart attacks, and treating Parkinson’s disease.

Botond Roska and his team will begin testing version 2.0 of the optogenetic vision restoration technology on blind people by the end of the year, with the hope of restoring the ability to read and recognize faces.

Botond Roska had this to say about the Frontiers Foundation: “I consider the foundation a good initiative, and I see Krausz as a key figure who can lead the whole endeavor to success. In science, people are the most important.”

Botond Roska, we look forward to having you home!
